Judge Dismisses Challenge to New York Law Allowing Driver’s Licenses for Illegal Immigrants

By in Immigration Alerts

A federal judge rejected an upstate county clerk’s legal challenge to the recently passed New York Green Light law, which means undocumented immigrants will be able to apply for driver’s licenses for the first time in almost 20 years.

The Green Light Law allows New Yorkers to apply for a driver’s license without having to provide immigration status or other documents, like a Social Security number. Now, undocumented immigrants will be able to use other forms of identity, including current utility bills and foreign passports during the application process.

The Green Light Law took effect on Saturday, December 14, 2019.
